갤러리 신라에서는 2015년 10월 23일부터 11월 28일까지 알란 챨톤의 “TRIANGLE PAINTINGS” 전을 개최합니다.
알란 챨톤(Alan Charlton, 1948~ )은 영국 셰필드 출생으로 런던 로열 아카데미를 졸업하고 24세라는 약관의 나이에 현대미술의 대표적인 화랑인 독일 뒤셀도르프에 위치한 갤러리와 미국 뉴욕 레오 카스텔리 화랑에서의 개인전을 연 이래, 유럽과 미국의 주요 미술관에서 150여 차례 이상의 전시를 선보이며 자신이 세운 회화의 방법론을 40여 년 간 굳건히 지켜오며 작업을 수행하고 있는 작가입니다.
알란 챨톤의 중성적이고 도시적인 회색은 명도의 무한한 변주를 가능하게 하면서 “침묵이며 부재의 색, 그러나 무한히 풍부한 뉘앙스와 고요함의 색”으로 모든 회화가 추구해 온 빛과 아우라를 화면에 부여하며 회색의 아름다움을 잘 보여주고 있으며 하나 혹은 여러 단위로 이뤄진 작품들은 전시 공간에 놓임으로 완성됩니다. 설치를 통하여 그림의 안과 밖, 그림과 그림 사이의 관계가 생겨나고 회색 형태들이 공간을 조율하게 됩니다. 단순함 가운데 일어나는 미묘한 차이들은 더욱 드러나게 되며 보는 사람 스스로 그 차이에 한없이 민감하게 되는 것은 알란 챨톤의 회화가 가지는 미덕입니다. 전시장이라는 3차원의 화폭 속에 형태처럼 배치된 회색 그림들 간에 발생하는 울림이 관객의 마음속까지 아우르게 되는 것입니다.
공간 속에서 우러나오는 빛과 아우라를 잘 표현해낸 알란 챨톤의 작업과 철학들은 많은 동시대의 예술가들에게 이론과 실천적 영감을 주어왔으며 여전히 어떤 전시에서도 자신만의 고귀하고도 진솔하며 흔들리지 않는 시각과 실행을 잘 보여주고 있습니다.
이번 갤러리신라 전시에서는 최근 제작한 신작인 Triangle Painting 시리즈로 대형 작품 9여 점이 갤러리신라의 공간에 맞게 선보일 예정입니다. 많은 관람 바랍니다.

“Alan Charlton(born 1948) is an artist who makes a gray painting”—so goes the artist’s self-stated epigram. In the 1970s, Charlton famously decided to make monochromatic paintings using only shades of gray and canvases whose dimensions are factors of 4.5 cm. Charlton settled on gray because he considered it the epitome of ordinary, but quickly realized the color’s permutable potential and expressiveness. Though he works within these strict parameters, Charlton has explored a wide variety of formal possibilities and combinations using his limited materials. He tends to work serially and methodically through iterations of an idea. “I want my paintings to be: abstract, direct, urban, basic, modest, pure, simple, silent, honest, absolute,” Alan Charlton says of his work. Each layer of paint is sanded producing a grey, velvet texture, a light absorbing uniform surface. This use of colour asks the viewer to concentrate predominantly on the form, from crosses, rectangles, squares and their borders to voids within shapes. The space where two canvases meet, four corners cut out of a canvas square, an outline physically painted on the wall. We look at these grey structured shapes and become aware of how they affect the space beyond their borders. Charlton feels it is important that the work maintains an honesty to the space it exists in. His paintings change our relationship to the surrounding architecture, highlighting the areas between the paintings. It forces us to read the spaces within and around the paintings.
