Sung Neung Kyung
갤러리신라 대구에서는 2024년 8월 23일부터 9월 25일까지 한국 전위 미술을 대표하는 작가 성능경의 개인전 <성능경의 어제, 이제, 하제>를 개최합니다.
성능경(Sung Neung Kyung, 1944-)은 홍익대 미대를 졸업하였으며, 한국적 개념미술을 개척한 선구자로 신문, 사진 등 대중매체와 비전통적 매체를 오가며, 이벤트, 신체예술 등 다양한 창작 방법론을 시도하였다. 1970년대 초 실험미술 그룹인 S.T(Space&Time)을 시작으로 본격적인 작품활동을 시작하였으며, 《S.T전》을 비롯하여 대구현대미술제, 서울비엔날레, 앙데팡당, 에꼴 드 서울 등 당대 주요 전시에 참여하여 신체를 이용한 이벤트와 사진, 설치 작업을 선보였다.
특히 신문과 사진 등의 매체를 활용해 주제를 전달하는 그의 작업은 탈장르적인 개념미술로 분류된다. 그것은 시대에 따라서는 권력에 대한 저항, 신체 회복의 표현, 일상에 대한 주목이기도 하다. “나는 미술과 생활 간의 경계를 허물고 작가의 아우라를 벗겨내고자 한다.”라는 작가의 언급처럼 그는 신체와 일상의 재료로 예술의 탈물질화, 일상성의 회복을 지향하는 퍼포먼스 작업을 지속하고 있다.
이번 전시의 주제는 성능경의 과거와 현재를 조망하고 새로운 작업의 전개 방향을 찾고자 하는데 그 의의를 둘 수 있다. “어제, 이제, 하제”의 의미는 과거와 현재 그리고 미래의 의미를 담고있다.
특히, ‘하제’는 ‘내일’의 순수우리말인 ‘할제’의 경상도 사투리이다. 중앙일변도의 문화집중 시스템에서 벗어나 지역의 문화활성화도 중요하다고 힘주어 말하는 작가는, 이번 전시가 경상도지역의 대구에서 개최된다는 점에서 경상도지역의 사투리를 전시제목에 사용하기로 하였다.

From August 23 to September 25, 2024, Gallery Shilla Daegu will present YesterdayTodayTommorrow, a solo exhibition by Korean avant-garde artist Sung Neung Kyung.
Sung Neung Kyung (1944 - ) is a graduate of Hongik University's School of Fine Arts and a pioneer of Korean conceptual art, where he experimented with various creative methodologies, such as Perfomances and Body art, using both mass media and non-traditional media such as newspapers and photography. In the early 1970s, he began his work in earnest with the experimental art group S.T. (Space&Time), and participated in major exhibitions of the time, including the Daegu Contemporary Art Festival, Seoul Biennale, Indépendant, and Époque de Seoul, where he presented Perfomances, photographs, and installations using the body.
His work, which utilizes media such as newspapers and photographs to convey his themes, is categorized as Genre over conceptual art. Depending on the time period, it is a resistance to power, an expression of body recovery, or an attention to everyday life. “I want to break down the boundary between art and life and strip away the aura of the artist.” As the artist states, he continues to work on performance works that aim to dematerialize art and restore everyday life with materials of the body and daily life.
The theme of this exhibition is to examine the past and present of performance art and to find a new direction for the development of new works for future. The meaning of “ YesterdayTodayTomorrow” refers to the past, present, and future. In particular, ‘haje’ is the Gyeongsan-do dialect of ‘halje’, which is the pure Korean word for ‘tomorrow’. The artist, who emphasizes the importance of regional cultural revitalization away from the centralized system of cultural concentration, decided to use the Gyeongsangbuk-do dialect for the title of the exhibition as it is held in Daegu, Gyeongsangbuk-do.
He has had solo exhibitions at Gallery Hyundai(2023), Lehman Muffin(2023), Baek Art(2023), Zaha Museum, Seoul (2023), and Kwanhoon Museum, Seoul(1985), and group exhibitions at the Guggenheim Museum, New York(2023 ~ 2024), National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul(2023/2017), Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art(2018), Daegu Art Museum(2018), and his works are in the collections of the Guggenheim Museum, New York, Rachowski Collection(USA), Korean National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art(Seoul), Seoul City Museum of Art(Seoul), GyeongGi Museum of Art, and Daejeon Museum of Art. In 2023, he was awarded the 19th Monthly Art Award in the artist category of the 19th Monthly Art Award (by wolgan misul magazine).
