갤러리신라 서울에서는 2023년 9월 7일부터 10월 07일까지 현대미술계에서 회색 (그레이) 미니멀회화 작업을 가지고 50여년간 자신만의 독보적인 작업세계를 구축해 온 세계적인 아티스트인 알란 챨톤의 개인전을 개최합니다.
알란 챨톤 (Alan Charlton, 1948~)은 영국 쉐필드 출생으로 런던 로얄 아카데미를 졸업하고 24세라는 나이에 현대미술의 대표적인 화랑인 독일 뒤셀도르프에 위치한 갤러리에서 첫 개인전을 연 이래, 유럽과 미국의 주요미술관에서 150여 차례 이상의 전시를 선보이며 자신이 세운 회화의 방법론을 50여년간 굳건히 지켜오며 자신만의 작업을 수행하고 있는 작가이다. 최근의 주요 미술관 그룹전으로 쿤스트뮤지엄 슐로스 데르네부르크의 홀 아트 파운데이션 (2022), 개인전으로 로마의 피노 컨템포러리 디아르떼 스튜디오 (2010), 독일 크레베의 쿠어하우스 미술관 (2008, 2002), 오스트리아 브레겐츠 투른 탁시스궁 (2006), 암스테르담 슈테델릭 미술관 (2001), 프랑스 님므의 꺄레다르 현대 미술센터 (1997), 이태리 토리노의 카스텔 로 디 리볼리 (1989), 파리시립 미술관 (1989) 등의 전시를 꼽을 수 있다. 알란 챨톤의 중성적이고 도시적인 회색은 명도의 무한한 변주를 가능하게 하면서 “침묵이며 부재의 색, 그러나 무한히 풍부한 뉘앙스와 고요함의 색”으로 모든 회화가 추구해 온 빛과 아우라를 화면에 부여하며 회색의 아름다움을 잘 보여주고 있으며 하나 혹은 여러 단위로 이뤄진 작품들은 전시 공간에 놓여짐으로 완성된다. 설치를 통하여 그림의 안과 밖, 그림과 그림 사이의 관계가 생겨나고 회색 형태들이 공간을 조율한다. 단순함 가운데 미묘한 차이들은 더욱 드러나게 되며 보는 사람 스스로 그 차이에 한없이 민감하게 되는 것은 알란 챨톤의 회화가 가지는 미덕이다. 전시장이라는 3차원의 화폭 속에 형태처럼 배치된 회색 그림들 간에 발생하는 울림이 관객의 마음속까지 아우르게 되는 것이다. 공간 속에서 우러나오는 빛과 아우라를 잘 표현해낸 알란 챨톤의 철학과 작업들은 많은 동시대의 예술가들에게 이론과 실천적 영감을 주고있으며 여전히 어떤 전시에서도 자신만의 고귀하고도 진솔하며 흔들리지 않는 시각과 실행을 잘 보여주고 있다.
2011년과 2015년 갤러리신라에서 두번의 개인전을 성공적으로 개최했던 알란 챨톤의 이번 전시는 대구와 서울에서 오는 10월 7일까지 국내에서 동시에 개최되는 작가의 대규모 전시가 될 것입니다. 작가 알란 챨톤의 신작인 Triangle Painting 시리즈와 Trapezium Painting 시리즈가 신라의 공간에 맞게 선보일 예정입니다.

Gallery Shilla Seoul will hold a solo exhibition of world-renowned artist Alan Charlton, who has created his own unique art world in the contemporary art world with his grey minimal paintings, from September 7 to October 7, 2023.
Alan Charlton (1948-) was born in Sheffield, England, graduated from the Royal Academy in London and had his first solo exhibition at the age of 24 in a gallery in Düsseldorf, Germany, a leading gallery for contemporary art. He has exhibited over 150 times in major art museums in Europe and the United States, and has been making his own work for the past 50 years, firmly adhering to the methodology of painting he has established. Recent group exhibition in Hall Art Foundation at Kunstmuseum Schloss Derneburg (2022) and solo exhibitions in major museums include Pinot Contemporary d'Arte Studio in Rome (2010), Creve in Germany. Kurhaus Museum (2008, 2002), Bregenz, Austria Turn Taxis Palace (2006), Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam (2001), Nimes, France Carredard Center for Contemporary Art (1997), Turin, Italy Castello di Rivoli (1989) and Musée d'Art de Paris (1989). Alan Charlton's neutral and urban grey allows for infinite variations in brightness, giving the canvas the light and aura that all paintings have sought as "the colour of silence and absence, but the colour of infinitely rich nuance and tranquillity" and the beauty of grey. The works, made up of one or more units, are completed by being placed in the exhibition space.
The installation creates a relationship between the inside and outside of the painting and between the paintings, and the grey forms coordinate the space. It is the virtue of Alan Charlton's painting that, in the midst of simplicity, subtle differences become more apparent, and that the viewer himself becomes infinitely sensitive to these differences. The resonance between the grey paintings, arranged like shapes on the three-dimensional canvas of the exhibition hall, engages the mind of the viewer. Charlton's philosophy and works, which well express the light and aura emanating from space, have provided theoretical and practical inspiration to many contemporary artists, and he continues to display his own noble, sincere and unwavering perspective and practice well in every exhibition. The exhibition of Alan Charlton, who successfully held two solo exhibitions at Gallery Shilla in 2011 and 2015, is a large-scale exhibition of the artist that will be held simultaneously in Daegu and Seoul until 7 October. The Triangle Painting Series and the Trapezium Painting Series, the new works by artist Alan Charlton, will be presented in accordance with Shilla's space.
