갤러리 신라 대구에서는 2023년 첫 전시로 윤상렬작가의 신작 개인전인 <조금. A little.> 전을 2월 14일부터 3월 12일까지 개최합니다.
윤상렬(Yoon Sang Yuel, b.1970~ )은 2007년부터 현재까지 자신만의 시각언어인 ‘선(line)’과 ‘빛 그리고 어둠(light and dark)’등 을 통해 다양한 작업을 전개해오고 있습니다. 이번 갤러리 신라 대구 전시에서는 다년간 반복적 긋기로 쌓인 겹 시리즈인 <침묵 : Silence> 연작의 연속선상에서 새로운 신작이 소개됩니다.
그의 작업은 시기별로 여러 시리즈를 진행해 오고있다. 전체적으로는 어릴 적 삶의 기억에서부터 사회적 경험에 이르기까지 수많은 사건과 현상, 관념을 총체적이고 축적된 기표들로 표현한 작업들로서 자연스레 긁적거린 흔적 또는 잔상인 ‘먼지 드로잉(Dust drawing)’, 집중적으로 붙여 형상화된‘다중 징표(Optical evidence)’, 그리고 반복적 긋기로 쌓여진 겹‘침묵 (Silence)’으로 표현되어지고 있다.
최근까지 진행해오고 있는 <침묵Silence 시리즈>는 앞선 <먼지Dust drawing> 작업들의 연속선상으로써 손과 디지털, 감성과 이성의 차이를 두고 작업 과정이 다르게 적용되는 작업이다. 수평과 수직으로 수없이 선을 긋고, 긋는 과정 속에서 순간 스치는‘번뜩이는 섬광’을 머금은 채, 그 느낌과 호흡을 유지하며 그 위에 필름을 겹치는 형식이다.
“나의 작업은‘두려움’에 내재된 단어에 숨겨진 의미, 즉,“진짜처럼 보이는 거짓된 징표-거짓으로 숨겨진 진실한 징표”라는 상황을 정체성 가늠의 기준으로 설정하여 근원적 탐구 자세로부터 기억 속 시공간의 잔상에서 시작된 지극히 개인적인 극복과정이다.”
<침묵Silence 시리즈> 작품들은 작가가 내면의 두려움을 극복하는 과정이다. 그는 태초부터 인간이 가지고 있는 감정인 '두려움'은 우리가 일평생 다스려야 하는 감정인 칠정<희노애락애오욕 (喜怒哀樂愛惡慾)>의 감정보다도 더 근원적인 감정이라고 생각한다. 그 ‘두려움’ 안에 숨은 의미가‘진실 같은 거짓과 거짓 안의 진실’이라 말한다. 진실과 거짓이라는 문제를 생각하고 있다면, 그 이전에 해프닝 혹은 사건 같은 어떤 이야기가 먼저 존재해야 한다. 사건, 현상, 관념에 대한 옳고 그름을 스스로 판단해가며, 굳이 잊혀가는 다양한 사건들을‘기억’해내면서까지 고민해야하는 그 ‘두려운 일’에 맞서고 있다. 아주 무수한 세밀한 선을 반복해서 그으면서, 자신의 두려움과 맞서고 있다. 그 행위의 반복을 통하여 그는 두려움을 극복해 내고 있다.
또한 자신의 작가노트에서 이 ‘두려움’은 지극히 개인적인 극복 과정이라고 말하고 있다. 어느 누구라도 그의 작업을 한번이라도 마주한 사람들은 그의 생각에 동의할 것이다. 작가의 무수한 선을 보고 있으면, 보는 사람들의 요동치는 마음이 일순간 서늘해지고 일순간 평온해지는 것이다. 침묵하며, 명상의 세계로 들어가는 것. 그것이 윤상렬의 회화가 가지고 있는 힘이라 느껴진다.
“ 긋고 보여 지는 것은 수평적으로 나타나지만 위아래로 보이지 않는 불규칙한 감성의 파장은 진폭이 크다. 그 기억의 감성들을 종이와 필름의‘사이’공간에서 반복적으로 지우고 다시 써 내려간다. 시간이 지나고 그 층들이 쌓여지면서 그림자와 환영은 서로 다른 두께를 드러낸다. 다만, 나는 눈에 보이지 않는 선이고 싶어 한다. 번뜩이는 섬광처럼….”

At Gallery Shilla Daegu, the first exhibition of 2023 is a new solo exhibition by Yoon Sang-yuel, will be held from February 14th to March 12th.
Yoon Sang Yuel (b.1970~ ) has been developing various works from 2007 to the present through his own visual language, 'line' and 'light and dark'.In this exhibition at Gallery Shilla Daegu, new works will be introduced along the continuation of the series, a series of layers accumulated through repeated drawing over many years.
His work has been progressing through several series by period. Overall, the works express countless events, phenomena, and ideas, from memories of childhood to social experiences, as total and accumulated signifiers. It is expressed as 'multiple signs (optical evidence)' shaped and 'silence' piled up by repetitive strokes.
The , which has been in progress until recently, is a continuation of the previous works, and is a work in which different work processes are applied with the difference between hand and digital, emotion and reason. It is a format in which countless lines are drawn horizontally and vertically, and a film is overlapped on top of them while maintaining the feeling and breath while holding the 'flash of light' that momentarily passes in the process of drawing.
“My work sets the meaning hidden in the word ‘fear’, that is, the situation of “a false sign that looks real – a true sign hidden in a lie” as the criterion for assessing identity, from a fundamental inquiry posture to an afterimage of space and time in memory. It is a very personal overcoming process that has begun.”
works are the process of overcoming the artist's inner fear. He believes that 'fear', an emotion that humans have from the beginning, is a more fundamental emotion than the emotions of the seven emotions that we have to control throughout our lives. The meaning hidden in the 'fear' is 'a lie like the truth and the truth within a lie'. If you are thinking about the problem of truth and lies, there must be some story, such as an incident or incident, before that. I am facing the 'fearful thing' that I have to worry about even while 'remembering' various incidents that are being forgotten by myself, judging right and wrong about events, phenomena, and ideas. He is confronting his own fears by repeatedly drawing countless detailed lines. Through the repetition of the act, he is overcoming his fear.
Also, in his artist note, he says that this ‘fear’ is an extremely personal overcoming process. Anyone who has ever encountered his work will agree with his thoughts. Looking at the artist's countless lines, the fluctuating mind of the viewer becomes cool and calm for an instant. Being silent, entering the world of meditation. I feel that this is the power of Yoon Sang-yuel's paintings.
“What is drawn and seen appears horizontally, but the wave of irregular emotions that cannot be seen up and down has a large amplitude. The emotions of those memories are repeatedly erased and rewritten in the space ‘between’ between paper and film. As time passes and the layers are piled up, the shadows and illusions reveal different thicknesses. However, I want to be an invisible line. Like a flash of light… .”
