갤러리 신라 대구에서는 작가 김영진의 개인전을 2022년 12월 20일부터 30일까지 개최합니다.
김영진(Kim Young Jin, 1946~)은 대구를 대표하는 현대미술작가로 70년대부터 설치, 조각, 비디오, 사진 등을 기반으로 한, 자신만의 고유한 언어로 실험적이고 유동적인 작업을 평생 해오고 있습니다. 이번 전시는 빛과 바람이라는 주제로 갤러리 신라의 공간에 특정한 네온설치작업 등이 선보일 예정입니다. 갤러리 신라에서의 2016년 개인전 이후 6년만에 개최되는 작가의 신작 개인전입니다.
김영진이 이번에 주목하는 작업의 요소는 다름아닌 ‘에너지’이다. 에너지는 눈에 보이지 않지만, 또 ‘에너지가 없다, 혹은 있다’라고 표현 할 수 있을 만큼 가시적인 영역에 들어있다. 여러 영역에서 다차원적인 에너지가 존재하지만 이번에는 어떤 공간이나 장소에 한정된 물리적 에너지를 보여주고자 시도한다.
그는 이번 갤러리 신라 전시에 앞서, 바람이라는 주제로 실험 영상을 촬영하였다. 작가들의 흔히 아이디어 스케치처럼, 그는 영상으로 스케치를 남기어, 눈에 보이지 않지만 요동치는 에너지를 만들었다. 그의 초기작 바람(1977년)과 일맥상통하는 작업으로 갤러리 신라라는 공간에서 그 실험이 확장되면, 더 크고 가득 찬 에너지를 볼 수 있을 것이다.
또한, 빛으로 발산시키고자 하는 실험도 선보인다. 그는 여러 차례 어둠, 빛, 그 빛의 발산 에 대한 현상을 다루어 왔다. 빛이라는 주제 역시 공간이라는 요소와 합쳐져 많은 현대미술가들에게 사랑받고 있는 주제다. 예로, 댄 플라빈의 미니멀아트 작업이나, 올라퍼 엘리아슨의 여러 프로젝트를 들 수 있다. 그러나 김영진의 빛은 조금 더 사유적/사변적 사고 안에서 시도되어왔다. ‘먼 별에서 떨어진 별똥별이 또 만나 부딪쳐 섬광 하나를 이루어 새 생명 하나로 태어나 그 육체의 무게를 이기지 못한 채 구분되지 않은 흙으로 다시 환원되어 영원히 사라져야하나. 방황chaos 에서 방랑 wander까지.’ 라는 연도미상의 작업메모에서 그는 빛을 생명의 원천으로 보고 있다. 이렇듯 빛은 그가 40여년간 실험해온 죽음과 생명이라는 주제의 범주에 있는 작업이라고 보인다.
특히, LED네온은 파장으로 인해 눈에 인식되는 것으로 망막을 통해 뇌로 전달된다. 이처럼 미세한 빛 에너지의 차이가 색상을 구분해내는 현상을 주목한 작업으로, 빛을 감상하고 섭취하고 인식하며 공유하는 과정을 통해 김영진은 에너지의 보편화 속에서 필연 또는 특수성을 찾고자 한다.

Gallery Shilla Daegu will hold a solo exhibition of artist Young Jin Kim from December 20th to 30th,
2022. Kim Young Jin (1946~) is a representative contemporary artist of Daegu. Since the 1970s, based on installation, sculpture, video, and photography, he has been doing experimental and flexible work in his own unique language throughout his life. Under the theme of light and wind, this exhibition will showcase neon installations specific to the space of Gallery Shilla. This is the artist's new solo exhibition held six years after the 2016 solo exhibition at Gallery Shilla.
The element of work that Young Jin Kim focuses on this time is none other than 'energy'. Energy is invisible, but it is in the visible realm enough to be expressed as 'there is no energy'. Multi-dimensional energy exists in many realms, but this time, he is trying to show physical energy limited to a certain space or place.
Prior to this exhibition at Gallery Shilla, he filmed an experimental video with the theme of wind. Like other artists’ idea sketches, he left sketches as video, creating invisible but pulsating energy. If the experiment work is expanded in the space of Gallery Shilla with his early work, Wind (1977), we will be able to see a bigger and fuller energy.
In addition, an experiment to emit light is also presented. He has dealt with the phenomenon of darkness, light, and the emission of light many times. The theme of light, combined with the element of space, is a subject loved by many contemporary artists such as Dan Flavin's minimal artwork or Olafur Eliasson's various projects. However, Young Jin Kim's light has been attempted in a more speculative way of thinking. In his work memo with an unknown year written, 'Should a shooting star that fell from a distant star meet again and collide to form a flash to be born as a new life, unable to overcome the weight of its body, return to undifferentiated soil and disappear forever. From chaos to wander.', he sees light as the source of life. In this way, light seems to be a work within the subject category of death and life, which he has been experimenting with for 40 years.
In particular, LED neon is perceived by the eyes by its wavelength and is transmitted to the brain through the retina. This work focused on the phenomenon of discriminating colors by subtle differences in light energy. Through the process of appreciating, ingesting, recognizing, and sharing light, Kim Young Jin seeks to find inevitability or specificity in the universalization of energy.
