서승원

Suh Seung Won

이후 그는 한국 A.G.

From November 2 to November 30, 2022, Gallery Shilla is holding a solo exhibition of Suh, Seung won (1941~), a pioneer of Korean geometric abstraction and a representative artist of Korean monochromatic paintings, “Dansaekhwa”. This exhibition is the first new solo exhibition in six years since the 2016 solo exhibition of Suh, Seung won held at Gallery Shilla.

Starting from his 20s to the present day in his 80s, Artist Suh, Seung won has been contemplating the topic of simultaneity in contemporary art. As a young man, he incorporated Korean elements such as hanok, chaekgado, and five colors into his works constantly. He also tried to move away from the previous generation’s informalism painting methods by concentrating on geometric abstract art condensed from traditional elements found in hanok such as window paper, flower, ceramic, door and furniture.

As a member of the A.G. Association of Korea, he later participated in the avant-garde art movement and continuously explored new formative languages. He particularly concentrated on materiality and Korean colors through white Korean paper. He has participated in and as a representative of Korea. He has also presented his own unique world of painting by submitting his work in , which was held at Tokyo gallery in Japan, 1975.

From the beginning to the present day, Suh, Seung won’s “simultaneity” work visualizes the dimension and characteristics of ‘simultaneity’ as it specifically contains a standardized (geometric form) yet Korean identity (recognition of Korean color that has been filtered through the five Korean colors) at the same time.

Starting with the early primary and geometric abstraction work, Suh, Seung won has worked repeatedly on creating a geometric art ideology until the 1980s, using neutral colors in order to reveal our spirituality. As the use of shape and color diminished during the 1990s, he tried to work on emotional paintings that assimilated himself into the transformed structure. After the 2000s, he went over a period of deconstructing himself where he tried to express a more liberated emotion by completely removing shapes as well as show new spirituality for his recovery in the meditative world and aesthetics. He continues to pursue these changes but remains to be persistent with his aesthetics.

Recently, he has been presenting deconstruction works that show “continuous variation of shape and color”.

While working, he contemplates a screen that is both flat and non-flat as well as spatial and non-spatial. In other words, he is concentrating on a screen that can be both flat and spatial and vice versa. Nowadays, he is further pursuing to develop a screen that includes both surface and space within itself. As he deconstructs surface and space, his works are hiding beneath the colors.

The act or expression of ‘filtering’ is very important in his work. He ‘filters’ the color and aims for the ‘filtered’ spirituality like the color of the light that penetrates through the window paper. Critic Yoon, Jin sup said that the color inherent in Suh, Seung won’s painting portrays our spirituality that bleached while the color was filtered instead of the color itself.

In today's art world, where unique colors are disappearing and standardization is taking place, the artist firmly believes that a shortcut to discovering the identity of our art is through finding our filtered color, shapes, and texture; this is done by comparing them one by one starting with our traditional five Korean colors to white, then to chromatic colors.

The exhibition, which is being held for the second time in Daegu, will introduce about 30 of his new paintings. This is an opportunity to get a glimpse of the basic attitude and philosophy of the artist: harmonizing the world of his work with the world of himself.

Hope you enjoy the exhibition.
