동경예술대학교와 동 대학원에서 조각을 전공한 작가는 아이러니하게도 3차원적 공간 대신 2차원적 평면에서 회화 작업하고 있다. 그러나 타카시 스즈키의 작품을 심층적으로 바라본다면, 2차원적 평면 작업에서도 조각의 성격 역시 드러나고 있음을 알아차릴 수 있다.
그는 강렬한 적색과 청색의 원색을 주로 사용하여, 캔버스 전체를 채우거나 간단한 선만으로 구성된 화면을 구성한다. 이러한 작업 방식에서는 색채를 가장 중시하는 태도도 엿보이지만, 더불어 화면을 조성하는 방법에서 조각의 특징 역시 찾을 수 있다. 즉, 색면 회화의 특징인 가장 순수한 색채와 순수한 화면의 성격도 존재하지만 조각의 특성인 일관성 역시 가지고 있는 것이다. 이러한 요소들이 타카시 스즈키의 작품에서 드러나고, 두 개의 선을 엇갈려 조성하는 작품에서는 공간성이 존재하는 듯한 착시가 생긴다.
특히 선을 화면에 사용하는 작품들은 그의 예술 활동 초반의 원통을 이용한 오브제 작업을 했던 경험에서 영향을 받은 것으로 보인다. 타카시 스즈키는 작가 활동 시작부터 1990년대까지 기하학적 형태의 육각기둥봉이나 단조 철환봉을 이용한 작업들을 해왔다. 이러한 조각 작업의 재료와 장소가 안료와 캔버스로 전환된 것일 뿐, 작가는 꾸준히 조각과 회화 사이의 관계성에 대해 고민해 오고 있는 것이다

2007년부터 작가가 주력으로 작업하고 있는 적색과 청색 모노크롬의 명료한 대비가 돋보이는 작품들은 전시장에 또 다른 공간성을 부여하고 그로 인해 확장된 공간을 경험하도록 이끈다. 더불어 타카시 스즈키의 작품들은 평면의 캔버스 위에서 조각의 가능성을 시사하고, 두 장르의 성격을 모두 발현하고 있다. 이번 전시를 통해, 전통적인 조각 방식에서 벗어나 색다른 지평선 위에서 자신만의 예술 철학을 고민하고 있는 타카시 스즈키의 작품들을 만날 수 있다.

The artist, who majored in sculpture at Tokyo University of the Arts and the same graduate school, ironically works on a two-dimensional plane instead of a three-dimensional space. However, if you take an in-depth look at Takashi Suzuki's work, you can notice that the nature of the sculpture is also revealed even in the two-dimensional flat work.
He mainly uses intense red and blue primary colors to fill the entire canvas or compose a screen composed of simple lines. In this way of working, an attitude that values color the most can be seen, but in addition, the characteristics of sculpture can be found in the way the screen is formed. In other words, it has the purest colors and pure screen characteristics, which are characteristics of color-field painting, but also has consistency, which is a characteristic of sculpture. These elements are revealed in Takashi Suzuki's work, and the work created by crossing two lines creates an optical illusion that spatiality exists.
In particular, the works that use lines on the screen seem to have been influenced by his experience of working with objects using cylinders in the early days of his artistic activities. From the beginning of his artist career to the 1990s, Takashi Suzuki has been working with geometric shapes of hexagonal poles and forged iron round bars. The material and place of this sculptural work have been converted to pigment and canvas, but the artist has been constantly contemplating the relationship between sculpture and painting

The works that the artist has been working on since 2007, with a clear contrast between red and blue monochrome, give another sense of space to the exhibition hall and lead to experience of the expanded space.
