Lee Gee Chil
「이기칠」의 개인전이 2006. 9.1(금)~9.29(금)까지 갤러리 신라에서 개최됩니다.
이기칠은 1962년 서울에서 출생하여, 서울대학교 미술대학 조소과와 동 대학원 졸업, 그리고 서울대학교 환경대학원 및 Chelsea College of Art & Design, London Institute에서 석사과정을 마치고 현재 경북대학교 교수로 재직중입니다. 그는 1995년 나무갤러리에서의 첫 개인전을 시작으로, 1996년 토탈 미술관, 1998년 문예진흥원미술회관 그리고 2000년 런던의 Mafuji Gallery에서 개인전을 가진 바 있습니다. 또한 그는 1997년 모란조각상대상과 1999년 김세중청년조각상을 수상하였고, 2001년에는 모란미술관에서 모란조각대상수상자 초대개인전을 가졌습니다. 2004년에는 김종영미술관의 <오늘의 작가>로 선정되어 <작업실>이라는 제목으로 초대개인전을 가진 바 있습니다.
이번 전시는 그의 최근 <작업실> 작업과 관련하여 그가 실험하고 있는 과정과 결과물들이 전시됩니다. 전시장에는 그가 설계하고 있는 작업실의 대형모형이 조각으로 제시되고 벽에는 작업실의 도면이 그려집니다. 이것이 일반적인 건축과정과 어떻게 다른가를 파악하기는 쉽지 않습니다. 하지만 이러한 건축적 표현방법을 현실세계에서 만나기는 더욱이 어렵습니다. 어쩌면 조각이 요구하는 근본적인 질문에 집착하던 그가 조각자체에서는 더 이상의 가능성을 찾지 못하고 마치 자신의 작업궤도를 크게 수정한 듯이 보이기도 합니다. 그러나 이기칠은 건축행위 그 자체보다는 작업실이라는 현실적인 공간에 관심을 갖고 있고, 이를 위해 철저하게 조각적인 방법으로 모든 문제를 풀어가고 있습니다. 그래서 그의 작업실은 물리적 공간이라기보다는 추상적 개념입니다. 이번 전시는 예술과 사회, 그리고 현실과 비현실을 넘나들고 있는 작가의 독특한 예술세계를 볼 수 있는 좋은 전시입니다. 현대 미술에 대한 새로운 경험과 개성이 깃든 작품을 감상 하실 수 있는 시간이 될 것입니다. 많은 관람 바랍니다.
작업실은 자신의 작업행위가 이루어지는 구체적인 장소이고 작가가 뿌리를 내릴 수 있는 정신의 거주지라 할 수 있다. 그러나 유목민적 가치관이 중시되는 현대사회에서 한 작가가 정신적 뿌리를 내리고 정착할 거주지를 찾기는 점점 어려워지는 듯싶다. 그래서 나는 어딘가에 정착하고 싶은 마음에서 내 자신의 작업실을 직접 짓기로 했다. 아직 부지는 확보되지 않았지만 나는 자연석을 잘라 돌벽돌을 만들고 사면의 벽을 세울 준비를 하고 있다. 한편으로는 작업실 건축을 위한 드로잉과 도면을 그리고 모형을 제작한다. 그리고 이것들은 현실적인 집의 기능을 하기 전까지 전시장에 설치되면서 예술로서의 기능을 하게 된다. 나는 이 작업을 통해 지극히 사적인 공간을 만드는 과정을 예술이라는 사회의 공적제도 속에서 논의함으로써 예술의 사회적 기능과 예술가의 현실조건에 대한 질문을 제기하고 이를 작업이라는 기제로서 풀어가고자 한다. - 작업 노트 중

Lee Gee Chil was born in Seoul in 1962. Graduated from the Department of Sculpture and Graduate School of Seoul National University, Graduate School of Environmental Studies, Seoul National University Graduate School of Environmental Studies and Chelsea College of Art & Design, London Institute. He is currently working as a professor at Kyungpook National University. The studio is a specific place where one's work is done and can be said to be a spiritual residence where the artist can take root. However, in a modern society where nomadic values are valued, it seems to be getting more and more difficult for an artist to find a place to settle down with his spiritual roots. So, I decided to build my own studio, wanting to settle down somewhere. Although the site has not been secured yet, I am preparing to cut natural stones to make stone bricks and build a wall on the slope. On the one hand, I make drawings, blueprints, and models for the construction of my studio. And before they function as a realistic house, they function as art as they are installed in the exhibition hall. Through this work, I intend to raise questions about the social function of art and the conditions of the artist's reality by discussing the process of creating an extremely private space within the public institution of art, and solve it through the mechanism of art. - Among the work notes
