60 years in the Japanese contemporary art world with geometric abstract paintings and minimal paintings.\r\n\r\nThe most prominent feature of Igarashi's paintings is the unique texture of the canvas surface created by carving and grinding the paintings. As the colors are limited to monotone such as grey, black, and white, either hard and smooth stones or architectural textures come to our mind the moment you first see his work. However, his early works in the 1970s are so rough that you can see the back of the canvas through the canvas screen. The repetitive actions of drawing, carving, and erasing on canvas screen accumulates and sublimates into a warm (passionate), rather than cold, geometric abstraction painting, which emphasizes the importance of his artistic language and point of view.\r\n\r\nFrom the late 1960s to the early 1970s, when he was actively working in the field, the Japanese art world was closely influenced by American painting as the front line of East Asian art. Unlike many American artists who created and abandoned minimal art, Igarashi created minimal art with his own work. There is nothing he wants to express through painting since he puts the purpose of his work on flatness itself. However, as his painting work is very modern and sophisticated, it is hard to believe that it was created 60 years ago.\r\n\r\n\u201cMy painting work was a continuation of drawing and carving. To be honest, for the past few years, I've been creating the surface of my painting by carving rather than drawing. Through the repetition of these actions, it can be said that I am looking for the possibility of painting. In there, complex and diverse circumstances of time are recorded as traces. Creating a work by carving the surface of a canvas also takes away the purpose of the canvas that is prepared for drawing.
