SELECTIONS Exhibition. This exhibition consists of both canvas paintings and three-dimensional contemporary artworks with a color, black. The gallery invited works by Lesley Foxcroft, Güter Umberg, Richard Serra, Quac, In Sik, Kim Ho-deuk, Moon Beum, Moon Pil Shim, Je Yeo Ran, and Choi Myoung Young.

Black is a color used by many concurrent concept artists. For example, Ad Reinhardt was fascinated by black through reductionism. Therefore, Reinhardt’s black work expresses negativity or emptiness. Repeated black, darkness, was an origin of vibration. In oriental perspective, black is an origin of creative energy of space. It pulls energy from sky, light, air and land, and combines everything.

This exhibition in Gallery Shilla would be an opportunity to perspectives of both Western and Eastern artists about Black.

* * *

Lesley Foxcroft (1949- ) installs walls with MDF and cardboard. Her choice of the mundane materials implies her interest in setting value on intention of artist over the medium. For this exhibition, she submitted a sculpture made with black industrial rubber plate. Foxcroft attempts to present simpleness through open planes and elaborate patterns.

Güter Umberg (1942- ) views painting as a special relationship. He considers the painted color as a presence of color which is both material and immaterial idea. Umberg’s black plane was made with coating pigments like graphite on aluminum plates, which seems like a fragment of cosmos.

Richard Serra (1939- ) bases his art practice on minimal art and extreme demand for reality. His interest in space explores ideas about gravity, time and real space. In the current exhibition, he introduces an Intaglio print from 1980s that visualized installation of sculptural work.

Quac In Sik (1919-1988)’s early works were Japanese Avant-garde based on various experiments on objects and spaces. In 1960s, Quac was interested in conflicts between “Western art” and “Oriental art”, and repetition of creation and demolition. Departing from flat surface painting process, he attached materials like glass, stone, wood, iron plates, and clays on the plane, resulting unique compositions. This series greatly influenced 1970s Monoha artists such as Sekine Nobuo and Lee U-Fan. Quac’s work in the exhibition is numerous dots from oriental ink stick, which expresses black and property of matter by overlap and repetition.

Kim Ho-deuk (1950- ) uses various traditional Korean ink drawing techniques. He has been creating contemporary visual language which contains oriental philosophy. Kim’s plane of abstract scenery with solid structure of painting embodies looseness and refinedness. With paper, pens and ink, he expresses synergy of creation, harmony, and collision through composition of lines and planes.

Moon Beum (1955 - ) explores endless possibility and beauty of tablo. Planes with one-color oil stick brings an image of Korean traditional watercolor landscape. However, the artist does not consider about specific scene during the process. Rather, the scenery is created by harmony of canvas, materials and fingers, which are the very primitive tools for expression.

Moon Pil Shim (1958 - ) has shown various artworks made of flexi glass. One or multiple thread-like lines are placed on color planes (orange, red, green, black) which are spread uniformly and evenly. These irregularly-spaced lines rhythmically cut and transform the planes. Also, the painted rectangular planes creates open and dynamic movement across the horizon.

Je Yeo Ran (1960- )’s works from 1993 have been portraying unified and fierce flow of vertical and curved black elements such as storm shower and twisted bushes. Her artworks are combinations of dark clots of paints and brush marks without set boundaries. It is not identifiable at first glance, but intense explosions and static images are positioned provocatively within the monumental structure of darkness. ,김원방 글에서 발췌.

Choi Myoung Young (1941-) expresses a boundary between material and immaterial through multi-layered paints created by overlap and repetition. In his “Condition Planes” series, the artist increases his contact with the surface to such an extent, that the individual marks are no longer visible and the surface appears as a void. In this exhibition, Choi’s work are composed of Korean traditional paper, Han-Ji, and ink. Using the physical and structural traits, he punctured the paper with needles to create uneven surface. The works are considered to not only well-contain Korean aesthetic through traditional ink, but also overcame limits of classical western style.
["post-158","gs_exhibition","type-gs_exhibition","status-publish","hentry
["GET
