who is currently a professor of painting at the University of the Arts in Geneva, Switzerland, is an artist who showcases geometric abstractionism. He creates works in which geometric figures with their own imbalance, rather than uniform lines and dots, are expressed with simple colors. When looking at his works, it is inevitable that the Russian artist Malevich (Kazimir Malevich, 1878-1935), who created a sensation in the art world in the early 20th century with his 1915 drawing of only black squares on white paper, comes to mind. \r\n\r\nHowever, there are clear differences between the works of Chardon and Malevich. As seen in Malevich's  (1916), his work is characterized by composing an unbalanced screen through a balanced geometric iconography. On the other hand, Chardon shows a balanced screen through intentionally deformed, unbalanced geometric figures. This is also the artist's will to seek his own view of art, breaking away from previous trends. In addition, the distorted shapes have a rhythmic nature, which evokes a visual effect as if watching video art in the exhibition space. \r\n\r\nHis recent works using only black and red, which are the simplest and most intense colors, are noteworthy in that they go against the artist's instinct to capture various colors on canvas and show the pinnacle of abstractionism. In particular, black is predominantly used in his works. As for the reason for using black, the artist says that he has no interest in color and prefers black and white for neutrality of painting, ignoring the allegorical interpretation of his work. His color selection is to close the possibility of various interpretations of the work and to respect the artistry and autonomy of the work itself. \r\n\r\nFurthermore, Chardon's characteristic is that he realizes flatness, an independent characteristic of painting, not only on canvas, but also through fabric. This means that he breaks down the 'common illusion that canvas does not exist, and that it is only a neutral support for receiving images'. In addition, it is characterized by showing the diversity of image receiving media while breaking the rule that 'unchanging consistency (a form of pulling the canvas tightly and fixing it with a stapler)' must be pursued. Chardon's works are exhibited at the Center Pompidou in Paris - the National Museum of Modern Art in Paris, the Mus\u00e9e d'Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean, Mus\u00e9e d'Art Moderne in Paris, the Mus\u00e9e d'Art Moderne in Strasbourg, It is housed in a number of institutions, including the Nantes Art Museum, the Wassenaar Borlinden Museum of Contemporary Art in the Netherlands, the Meritz Fire Foundation in Seoul, and the Martha Herford Museum in Munich. Gallery Shilla Seoul presents the artist's recent works from 2017 to 2021. Through this exhibition, you can meet the works of Nicolas Chardon, who are constructing a new world of abstract art by showing novelty by transforming the shapes on the canvas, expanding the media for receiving images.","source":"","date_label":"","external_url":"","publication_date":"","isbn":"","price":"","dimensions":"","weight":"","pages":"","credit":"","authors":"","description":"","kind":"","contact_html":"","portrait":0,"hero":1907,"biography_pdf":0,"press_pdf":0,"document_pdf":0,"cover":0,"artist_id":0,"inquiry":false,"works":[{"id":1915,"caption":"Nicolas Chardon, VARIA, Acrylic on fabric, 61 x 38 cm, 2018","alt":"Nicolas Chardon, VARIA, Acrylic on fabric, 61 x 38 cm, 2018"},{"id":1916,"caption":"Nicolas Chardon, VARIA, Acrylic on fabric, 120 x 60 cm, 2018","alt":"Nicolas Chardon, VARIA, Acrylic on fabric, 120 x 60 cm, 2018"},{"id":1917,"caption":"Nicolas Chardon, Pointe, Acrylic on fabric, 30 x 30 cm (h 42), 2017","alt":"Nicolas Chardon, Pointe, Acrylic on fabric, 30 x 30 cm (h 42), 2017"},{"id":1918,"caption":"Nicolas Chardon, Pointe, Acrylic on fabric, 30 x 30 cm (h 42), 2017","alt":"Nicolas Chardon, Pointe, Acrylic on fabric, 30 x 30 cm (h 42), 2017"},{"id":1919,"caption":"Nicolas Chardon, Pointe, Acrylic on fabric, 30 x 30 cm (h 42), 2017","alt":"Nicolas Chardon, Pointe, Acrylic on fabric, 30 x 30 cm (h 42), 2017"},{"id":1920,"caption":"Nicolas Chardon, Carr\u00e9 noir, Acrylic on fabric, 80 x 80 cm, 2021","alt":"Nicolas Chardon, Carr\u00e9 noir, Acrylic on fabric, 80 x 80 cm, 2021"},{"id":1921,"caption":"Nicolas Chardon, carr\u00e9 rouge sur fond noir, Acrylic on fabric, 40 x 40 cm, 2020","alt":"Nicolas Chardon, carr\u00e9 rouge sur fond noir, Acrylic on fabric, 40 x 40 cm, 2020"},{"id":1922,"caption":"Nicolas Chardon, Croix rouge (B), Acrylic on fabric, 30 x 30 cm, 2020","alt":"Nicolas Chardon, Croix rouge (B), Acrylic on fabric, 30 x 30 cm, 2020"},{"id":1923,"caption":"Nicolas Chardon, Cinema, Acrylic on fabric, 3 x (27 x 41) cm, 2005","alt":"Nicolas Chardon, Cinema, Acrylic on fabric, 3 x (27 x 41) cm, 2005"}],"installation":[{"id":1908,"caption":"","alt":""},{"id":1909,"caption":"","alt":""},{"id":1910,"caption":"","alt":""},{"id":1911,"caption":"","alt":""},{"id":1912,"caption":"","alt":""},{"id":1913,"caption":"","alt":""},{"id":1914,"caption":"","alt":""}],"extra":[],"participants":[{"id":17,"name_ko":"","name_en":""},{"id":0,"name_ko":"The Shapes of Things","name_en":""}]},"footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-125","gs_exhibition","type-gs_exhibition","status-publish","hentry"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/galleryshilla.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/gs_exhibition\/125","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/galleryshilla.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/gs_exhibition"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/galleryshilla.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/gs_exhibition"}],"version-history":[{"count":3,"href":"https:\/\/galleryshilla.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/gs_exhibition\/125\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":3645,"href":"https:\/\/galleryshilla.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/gs_exhibition\/125\/revisions\/3645"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/galleryshilla.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=125"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
