paintings by Robert C. Morgan at its location in Seoul. Primarily known as an art historian, critic, curator, and poet, Morgan also functions as an artist. After his early geometric paintings and hybrid ink paintings in the late 1960s and 70s, he began producing experimental works in various genres, including films, videos, and performances throughout the 1980s, concomitant with writing reviews on exhibitions and publishing books on art criticism in the 1990s, which has continued into the 21st Century. During this period, he returned to painting minimal \/ geometric paintings, which have continued up until the present day. \r\n\r\nThe current solo exhibition, titled \u201cTo Discover the Shape of Light,\u201d will present his recent work focused on geometric abstract paintings, mostly in a serial format. The artist said the influences on his painting come from historical sources that include early twentieth century Suprematism and Constructivism, and eventually the artists of the Bauhaus. The most contemporary influence would be the early aluminum paintings of Frank Stella. However, most of these works would eventually prove secondary to the artist\u2019s reading of the Tao Te Ching which he accidentally found in a San Francisco bookstore. As Lao-tzu's philosophy saw existence and non-existence as fused together and complementary, the essential concept derived from this book reads as follows: \u201cThere is no darkness without light, and no light without darkness opens up countless possibilities of non-representational painting.\u201d \r\n\r\nAs he actively applied the Eastern philosophy to the relationship between light and darkness, there are two fundamental elements in his paintings: One is the reflection of external light on metallic forms, and secondly, the absorption of light in relation to mixed earth colors and ultramarine. The artist\u2019s intention is to capture the instant between the reflection and absorption of light, in accordance with the concept that \u2018the source of light is based on Tao Te Ching. Among the works in this exhibition, in the  series, objects of opposite nature achieve harmony as one rather than confrontation. \"Loggia\" is an open space that connects the main building and the outside in Italian architecture. The outside light comes in unhindered, but on the other hand, there is appropriate shade (darkness) in the space. His works are geometrically simple in composition and limited in color, such as ultramarine blue, earthy tones, and metallic copper or silver colors. In particular, to emphasize that darkness is also a part of light, the artist refused to use black directly and visualized darkness by mixing several colors. \r\n\r\nMorgan\u2019s paintings and related art works have been exhibited in several individual and group exhibitions throughout the United States, Europe, South America, and the Republic of Korea. He has shown in prestigious galleries and museums, including the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston (1972, 1974), The Memorial Art Gallery, University of Rochester (1986), Cologne Art Fair (1990), Millennium Film Workshop (1988), and The Museum of Modern Art, Film Department (1999). In 2017, Morgan had a major survey exhibition (with catalog) at the Proyectos Montclova in Mexico City (March 23 \u2013 April 29, 2017).
