Media artist Jang Young-shin's solo exhibition will be held at Gallery Shilla from November 16 (Wed) to December 3 (Sat), 2011. Born and raised in Daegu, the artist majored in Korean Literature and Art History at Ewha Womans University and graduated from New York School of Visual Art with a major in Photography and Related Media Arts.
Jang Young-shin says that the most important thing for a media writer is 'discipline'. Due to the nature of the medium, media art does not go through a long-term training process for mastery and mastery, so anyone can easily access it, which often leads to technically oriented conceptual work. Therefore, it is inevitable to fall into the play of ideas that are separated from reality and have limitations in capturing the true spirit of the artist. She is a young artist who is doing practical work based on a discipline that knows how to encompass the body, soul and emotions. The artist presents a work that explores the boundary between reality and unreality by showing images of unfamiliarity hidden in the familiarity of everyday life through a collection of images and sound fragments collected directly from the field. In addition, he ponders the correlation between capital and works of art in the same era that anyone majoring in contemporary art encounters and asks the audience questions about the way art exists through objects placed in heterogeneous spaces.
The title of this solo exhibition translates as 'uncommon theater'. The artist regarded the gallery space as a theater while working on video. In the theater and on the stage, young, cool and pretty characters always carry dramatic events, but in his work, he tells the people he can meet in marginalized spaces such as market corners and parks, and their trivial stories. Through these elements of stark opposition between fantasy and reality, the artist composed the exhibition to decorate the exhibition space as a theater with a new meaning completely different from the existing theater.
This exhibition consists of two works, <37> and <37>. <37> explores the boundary between familiarity and unfamiliarity, reality and unreality through a collection of images and sound fragments collected from walking around Tapgol Park, Jongno, and Goseong, Gangwon-do.
