Hoon Kwak
2016년 새해를 여는 첫 전시로 곽 훈 작가의 신작을 소개할 수 있어서 매우 기쁘게 생각합니다.
곽 훈은 대구 출신 작가로 1975년 미국으로 건너가 동양의 정신세계를 담아내는 작업을 통해 물질주의적 주류에 대한 문화적 도전을 제시하여 미국 화단의 주목을 받은 작가로서 새로움을 향하여 끊임없이 노력하는 작가입니다.
이번 전시에서는 신작 회화 작품 10여 점과 흙을 굽고 채색한 도자 설치 작품도 선보입니다. 이번 작품은 그의 전작인 <다완(Tea Bowls)>, <기(氣)>, <겁(Kalpa, 劫)>, <주문(Incantation)> 시리즈와 일맥상통하는 메시지를 담고 있는 작품입니다. 눈앞에 당장 포착되지 않는 불가시(不可視, invisible)의 세계와 현재의 전후에 걸친 과거, 미래를 관통하는 양상들이 곽 훈 선생만의 선과 색채로 잘 드러나 있습니다. 이 선은 그가 택한 조형적 선택에서 배제된 사물의 생명과 그 기운이 확장된 영역을 보여줍니다.
50여 년의 화가로서의 삶과 에너지, 그리고 예술세계를 대하는 작가적 태도를 어떻게 녹여내는지를 엿볼 수 있는 좋은 기회가 될 것입니다. 많은 관람 바랍니다.

Hoon Kwak (born in 1941) represents the profound spiritual world of Buddhist thought and Eastern philosophy through use of Korean materials. He expresses this in an indeterminate composition and unrestricted, lively brush touches, offering deep lingering resonances. Such abstract renditions occur not only in his paintings but also in his installations. Compared to his many years of painting, Kwak’s installation has been produced in a brief period of time and low in number. As in his painting, his installation is also based on Buddhist thought and Oriental philosophy, eloquently representing his disposition, in that his experimental spirit is added to an abstract way of expression. Absorbing the concept of space based on each theme, the works on display appear naturally associated with one another. As the three subjects, Poem, Tea, and Contemplation were the main focus of Kim Jeonghui and the purpose of art and life sought after by the artist Kwak, the museum intends to offer its venues to viewers by turning them into the space for contemplation, presenting Kwak’s works in harmony with the venues.
