동시대 현대미술계와 미술사에서 자리매김 하고 있는 키시오 스가(Kisho Suga, 1944-)는 모노하의 중심인물로 그동안의 전시와 작품들을 재평가 받으면서 세계 유수의 미술관과 갤러리에서 성공적인 전시를 개최하였습니다. 그는 최근 마이니치 미술상 (57회 Mainichi Art Award)을 수상하였습니다. 그는 물(物, things)에 대한 관심을 자신만의 철학으로 깊고 풍부하게 발전시켰으며 그것이 그의 꾸준한 작품 활동의 원동력이 되어 왔습니다. 다양한 소재들인 – 나무, 돌, 쇳조각 혹은 유리조각 – 자연물과 인공물을 자유롭게 활용하면서 이들 사물 간의 조합과 배치를 통한 작업들입니다. 특정한 전시 공간 내에 서로 다른 소재들을 의도적으로 대립구도로 배치하거나 하나의 작품으로 만들고 나아가 물질과 공간 그리고 인간 사이의 상호 의존적 관계를 표현함으로써 물체의 존재 그 자체를 더욱 두드러지게 하는 작가입니다.

Kishio Suga (born 1944), is a Japanese sculptor and installation artist currently living in Itō, Shizuoka, Japan. He is one of the key members of Mono-ha, a group of artists who became prominent in the late 1960s and 1970s. The Mono-ha artists explored the encounter between natural and industrial materials, such as stone, steel plates, glass, light bulbs, cotton, sponge, paper, wood, wire, rope, leather, oil, and water, arranging them in mostly unaltered, ephemeral states. The works focus as much on the interdependency of these various elements and the surrounding space as on the materials themselves.
