스위스 태생의 니엘 또로니(Niele Toroni, 1937~) 현재 프랑스에서 거주하면서 작업하는 작가로서 세계 현대 미술계의 중요작가로서 자리매김 되는 작가이다. 작가는 1997년 광주 비엔날레에도 초대 된 작가이며 현재 파리 최고의 화랑인 이본람베르(Yvon Lambert Gallery)에서 40주년을 기념하여 개인전이 개최되기도 했다. 주어진 공간을 자연스럽게 받아들이고 최대한의 신체적 노동과 최소한의 흔적, 그리고 제한된 색채만으로 무한대의 새로운 이미지를 만들어내고 있는 니엘 또로니는 가공할 자본력과 신종의 기술, 새로운 재료와 매체의 실험으로 엄청난 생산성을 보여주는 현대미술에 대하여 동시대 미술에서 일어나고 있는 논쟁에는 관심이 있지만, 흥미로운 많은 미술이 생산되고 있지 못한 오늘의 미술이 그 자체로서 자신의 흥미를 끌지는 못한다고 말한다.

Niele Toroni (born March 15, 1937 in Muralto[1]) is a Swiss painter. Niele Toroni pioneered a practice called “Travail-Peinture” which entails marking a surface with imprints of a no. 50 paintbrush at regular 30 cm intervals. Executed on diverse surfaces such as canvas, cloth, gallery walls, and floors, Toroni’s works are both paintings and painterly interventions into space. Each marking is distinct and yet all the markings are the same, transforming the experience of spaces and creating a field in which formal tensions between uniformity and difference,repetition and spontaneity emerge.
