프레드 샌드백은 1943년 뉴욕 브롱스빌 출생으로 예일대학에서 철학전공후, 예일대학원에서 조각을 공부했다. 장소특정적인 그의 작업은 몇가닥의 실이나 금속선 들을 공중에 매달거나 빈 공간에 배열하는 것 뿐이지만 이를 바라보는 관람객이 선이 표현하지 않는 공간까지 머릿속에서 인식해 입체적인 공간감을 느끼게 하는 것이 특징이다. 미국 미니멀리즘의 대표작가 프레드 샌드백은 선으로 공간에 드로잉하는 것으로 유명하다. 샌드백은 40년의 작업 기간동안 일관되게 채색된 아크릴실과 탄성이 있는 노끈, 금속와이어 등을 사용하여 공간을 드로잉하고, 공간을 점유하는 물성이 존재하지 않음에도 조각적인 부피감을 의도하는 설치작업을 해왔다. 또한 공간 내에서 작품을 감상하고 체험하는 작품 관람의 태도에 대한 의문을 제시하며 관람자의 지각이 예술 작품과 상호작용하여 작품과의 공감적 관계를 형성하게 했다. 평면 위에 그려진 1차원의 직선들로 3차원을 그려내는 프레드 샌드백의 솜씨는 놀라울 정도이다. 세심하게 조금씩 변형되는 드로잉 선들은 관람객이 앞뒤로 이동할때마다 느낌을 달리하며 공간을 창출해낸다. 선을 이용하여 공간전체를 구성한 그의 작품은 미술작품의 새로운 시도를 보여줌으로써 미술관계자들로부터 크나큰 호평을 받았다.

Fred Sandback (August 29, 1943 – June 23, 2003) was a minimalist conceptual-based sculptor known for his yarn sculptures, drawings, and prints. Using acrylic yarn, Fred Sandback made Minimalist sculptures that impress themselves upon the eye as objects with volume and mass. The subtlety of the artist’s choice of material allows the spaces between the lines to become as visible as the lines themselves. For almost 40 years, Mr. Sandback persisted in using the simplest of means to create subtly complex perceptual effects. To the viewer's eye, the thin, slightly fuzzy yarn would seem to lose its physical presence and turn into dematerialized lines of color. His compositions also had another uncanny illusionistic effect: the colored lines seemed like the edges of transparent, glasslike planes. This paradoxical play with material fact and perceptual illusion had philosophical implications. Like other Minimalists, Mr. Sandback wanted to focus the viewer's awareness on the here and now, to avoid directing the imagination toward anything not immediately present. Without any solid object or symbolic reference, his works promoted a heightened sensitivity to the experience of being and moving about in space and to ways that perceptions can alter the bare facts.
